Promise concerning the Land
What does the Bible say about Israel’s right to the land? And how far stretches the promises made to Israel?
Here follows some of the verses in the Bible on this subject.
God calls Abram
The LORD had said to Abram, "Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you.
"I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.
I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you."
Genesis 12:1-3
The LORD’s covenant with Abram
On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram and said, "To your descendants I give this land,
from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates”.
Genesis 15:18
The promise was renewed with Isaac
Stay in this land for a while, and I will be with you and will bless you. For to you and your descendants
I will give all these lands and will confirm the oath I swore to your father Abraham. I will make your
descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and will give them all these lands,
and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed.
Genesis 26:3-4
Jacob wrestled with God and receives the name Israel
Then the man said, "Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have
struggled with God and with men and have overcome."
Genesis 32:28
God said to him, "Your name is Jacob, but you will no longer be called Jacob; your name will be
Israel." So he named him Israel. And God said to him, "I am God Almighty; be fruitful and increase
in number. A nation and a community of nations will come from you, and kings will come from your body.
The land I gave to Abraham and Isaac I also give to you,
and I will give this land to your descendants after you."
Genesis 35:10-12
How long would the promise be in effect
I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your
descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your
descendants after you. The whole land of Canaan, where you are now an alien, I will give
as an everlasting possession to you and your
descendants after you; and I will be their God."
Genesis 17:7-8
The LORD said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, “Lift up your eyes from where you are and
look north and south, east and west.
All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever”.
Genesis 13:14-15
